About the training:
Treating trauma can be toxic to providers and agencies alike. Secondary trauma is real and impacts treatment, staff, and administration. In addition to the ongoing stress of the much-needed work we do, COVID 19 still lives among us, for now, like an invisible enemy whose influence is only seen through its impact. Knowing it is out there but being unable to clearly see it, creates a primary stress response in all of us. The paradox of this pandemic is that when stressed humans have a biological drive to flock toward safe others, which when done in traditional ways (physical connection) can be one of the most dangerous things we can do. Dealing with both primary and secondary stress at the same time is a unique situation of a time for many of us right now. This training will explore how to promote healing and hope in those we serve, our staff, each other, and ourselves. Develop skills for coaching to help us walk with and empower those we support instead of rescuing them. Explore the origins of the differences between, and ways to, address vicarious trauma, secondary trauma, and burnout in our staff and ourselves. As well as its impact on the agency and what can be done about it. We will look at what research tells us, what our work experiences have shown us and develop a plan to assist us, our staff and those we serve in negotiating this work that is as challenging as it is needed.
Objectives and Agenda: Upon completion of this training participants will be able to:
9:00 a.m. – 9:45 a.m. Identify and address vicarious trauma, secondary trauma and burnout in the workplace and its impact on staff, supervision, administration, the agency, and those served.
9:45 a.m. – 10:30 a.m. Explore structural, systemic, and synergistic stressors, how to recognize and reduce them at work, for staff and those served.
10:30 a.m. – 10:45 a.m. Break
10:45 a.m. – 11:20 a.m. Identify and address the importance of felt safety and how to create it for staff and administration.
11:20 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. Discuss the Fear Cascade including COVID’s impact on it and explore ways to move onto the Cliffs of Safety.
12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m. Lunch
1:00 p.m. – 1:45 p.m. Assist supervisors, staff, and administrators in helping those they serve move onto the Empowerment Triangle while recognizing and addressing the challenges connected with their work.
1:45 p.m. – 2:30 p.m. Use of resilience-based interventions to assist those we serve and ourselves in regulating during chronic, uncertain stress.
2:30 p.m. – 2:45 p.m. Break
2:45 p.m. – 3:20 p.m. Identify the five good things found in mutually enhancing relationships and how to use them for self-care and celebrate ways you accomplished them even from a distance when needed.
3:20 p.m. – 4:00 p.m. Develop a Leadership and self-care plan for themselves and an approach to coach supervisees do the same.

About this event: Stark County Mental Health & Addiction Recovery supports the Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training of law enforcement professionals in our community. Crucial to reducing violence and ensuring successful intervention of mental health and substance use situations, dispatchers are trained in proven and effective communication techniques.
The CIT model was first developed and implemented in 1988 by the Memphis, Tennessee Police Department. The Team was developed to address the special challenges to law enforcement posed by persons with mental illness and to better serve the community.
Emergency dispatchers are a critical link in the CIT program and may include call-takers, dispatchers and 911 operators. The success of CIT depends on their familiarity with the CIT program, knowledge of how to recognize a CIT call involving a behavioral crisis event, ability to solicit information that will help the community member and the responding CIT Officer, and appropriate dispatch of CIT Officers.

About the training: Motivational Interviewing is a collaborative, person-centered form of guiding to elicit and strengthen motivation for change. It is a way of working with persons to assist them in accessing their intrinsic motivation to change behaviors that contradict their essential values and interfere with the achievement of their life goals. Motivational Interviewing is both a philosophy and a set of strategic techniques. It is an evidence-based treatment with a broad range of applications. The Center for Evidence-Based Practices makes an attempt to incorporate exercises and examples specific to the unique practice settings of participants, with an emphasis on individuals with severe and persistent mental illness and/or substance use disorders.
Foundations of Motivational Interviewing: Part 1 introduces participants to the philosophical roots and essential constructs of the model. Participants will be introduced to the Engaging process and learn skill-building exercises designed to assist them in utilizing person-centered approaches and engage people in change discussions. They will practice strategies to respond to resistance in work settings for individuals with severe and persistent mental illness and/or substance use disorders.
Foundations of Motivational Interviewing: Part 2 reviews the basic concepts learned in Foundations of Motivational Interviewing: Part 1 and discusses with participants their experiences integrating the model into their work. They will be introduced to the Focusing, Evoking and Planning processes. Participants will learn specific techniques to recognize, evoke and strengthen change talk, as well as consolidate a person’s commitment to change. Participants will have an opportunity to practice these techniques in role/real-play and other group exercises.

About this event: This course is designed to provide a practical map through the marshy minefield of uncertainty in risk assessment for violence. The demographics of violence and the specific incidence of violence in different psychiatric diagnoses will be reviewed. Dangerousness will be discussed in persons with psychosis, mania, depression, and substance abuse. Special attention will be given to persons with paranoid delusions, command hallucinations, premenstrual tension, and homosexual panic. Personality traits associated with violence will be discussed. Childhood antecedents of adult violence will be covered. Advice will be given on taking a history from potentially dangerous patients and countertransference feelings. Instruction will be given in the elucidation of violent threats, sexual assaults, and “perceived intentionality.”
Learning Objectives:
- At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to specify four types of paranoid delusions that can lead to homicide.
- Participants will be able to identify the relative risk of violence in schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, and substance abuse.
- Participants will be able to indicate three factors that increase the likelihood that violent command hallucinations will be obeyed.
