Trainer: Michael Fox – Research Associate/Trainer at Case western Reserve University

Who should attend: Clinicians who provide services to youth with co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.

About this event: This 3-hour training is presented from the specialized perspective of providing clinical services to youth with co-occurring mental health and substance use disordersMost clinicians recognize and readily agree that ‘adolescents are not adults’ – but what does this mean?  Understanding teenage behaviors is challenging enough without the extra complications of co-occurring mental health and substance use disorders.  This training begins with a review of multiple developmental perspectives active during adolescence.  This exploration segues into guided considerations of expected (and some unexpected) mental health diagnoses for adolescents.  The multiple layers of overlapping symptoms/presentations are then examined while considering differential diagnoses and integrated care.

Objectives

  1. Participants will understand the unique differential diagnostic challenges working with adolescents
  2. Participants will learn the most common mental health diagnoses that co-occur with substance use disorders in adolescents
  3. Participants will identify diagnostic criteria for specific mental health diagnoses and consider the potential overlap of symptoms that challenge differential diagnosis
  4. Participants will review the importance of designing treatment goals to address the complicated diagnoses and needs of co-occurring adolescents.

This training is one of four in a course of trainings by Mr. Fox occurring on Friday August 14, 21, 28 and September 4, 2020.  You can attend all four or select the trainings you want to attend.  You must register individually for each training you want to attend.

Location – Held via Zoom. Registrants will receive a link the week before.

Cost – This is a free training.
